Baryshnikov Arts Center - Jerome Robbins Theater

In 2009, Martin Kapell, AIA was challenged by the renowned dancer and choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov: turn a concrete box into a state of the art theater. Baryshnikov's organization, new tenants of the performing arts complex at 450 West 37th Street, aimed to remake a drab and deficient theater space into the jewel that became the Jerome Robbins Theater. The architect, working closely with ARUP's Performing Arts Group, responded with a holistic vision that integrated every technical requirement with a striking architectural form.

One of the most striking features of the theater are interlocking staircases that enwrap the seating area. Refined and sculptural, the set of staircases originated from an inventive solution to a practical problem: providing two means of egress from the orchestra and balcony levels of seats to one side of the theater.
